Cyber Snackz™ Parent's Guide
Introduction to the Cyber Snackz™ Activity Book
Technology and cybersecurity can be intimidating if you don't have much experience with it. We made these videos and guides to help you dive deeper into topics that are of interest to you and your children. You might even develop your own knowledge and skills along with your children!
The Internet an IoT Guide
In this video we will delve into what the internet and internet of things (IoT) . The internet is a global network of interconnected computers and devices and has led to the invention of the internet of things or IoT. The term is used to describe the network of connected devices that communicate with each other and with the internet. These devices can include everything from smartphones and laptops to smart home devices like thermostats, security cameras, and even cars.
Threats Guide
There are different types of threats that can be found on the internet. As much connectedness and technological advancements as the internet has brought us, it also brought us more risks as the number of attacks and the spread of cybercrime grows. Often, cyber threats may be perpetuated by people called “hackers” and can include things like malware, ransomware, and phishing.
Good Internet Citzenship and Internet Safety Guide
One of the key ways we can help keep our children safe is by teaching them to be good internet citizens. There are several key principles to keep in mind when practicing good internet citizenship. While not all of these are discussed in the activity book, we include them here so that you may discuss them with your child as you see the opportunity arise. These principles include:
Respect for others: Treating others with respect and kindness online, just as you would in person.
Responsibility: Taking responsibility for your online actions and their consequences.
Honesty: Being honest and truthful in your online interactions.
Privacy: Protecting your personal information and respecting the privacy of others.
Critical thinking: Evaluating information critically and being wary of fake news and misinformation.
Complementary to good internet citizenship, some of the keys to good internet safety are:
Using secure passwords: Use strong, unique passwords for each of your online accounts and change them regularly.
Reviewing and adjusting privacy settings on websites and social media: Adjust your privacy settings on social media and other online platforms to control who can see your information.
Using antivirus software: Install antivirus software on your computer and keep it up to date to protect against malware and other threats.
Phishing awareness: Be aware of phishing scams and other forms of social engineering, where attackers try to trick you into revealing personal information or downloading malware.
Safe browsing: Use secure websites and be wary of downloading files or clicking on links from untrusted sources.
The final page of the activity book has an internet safety pledge. Please go through the pledge with your child and discuss what each portion of the pledge means and why it is important.
